HEATER WATER VALVES
The Smiths-brand heater valves
were used on many British cars of
the 1960's and 1970's, even Rolls
Royce, although the valves were
operated by an electrical switch and
solenoid rather than a cable on
Rolls Royce. The valves work well
until the diaphragms deteriorate and
break, dumping cooling water
around in the engine bay, and
putting the car on the side of the
road. Preventive maintenance can
save this embarrassment and
inconvenience by replacing the valve when it has reached a certain age but
before it fails. How often should the valve be replaced?--That is the question.
The answer of every two to ten years isn't too helpful. A simpler question that
you may answer more easily is this one--Does your old valve look like it will
make it through the summer? You can beg the question if you like by keeping a
spare in the trunk.
