“THE RED CAR," A GOOD READ ABOUT A TEENAGER AND HIS
MG-TC PROJECT
"The Red Car" is a book written by Don Stanford in 1954 "for boys and girls of all ages who admire fine
cars and good sportsmanship."  "The Red Car" was available as a Scholastic Book, sold in schools in the
1950s and early 1960s, and many of the original readers later became British car enthusiasts.  As so many
British car enthusiasts remember the book so fondly, The Roadster Factory sought permission to reprint it
from the author's daughter, Kathy Clarke, and we are now selling from our second printing.
"The Red Car" tells the story of Hap Adams, a Colorado farm boy who buys a wrecked MG against his
parents' wishes.  Hap repairs the car with help from a local garage mechanic named Frenchy Lascelle, a man
with a secret past in amateur motor racing.  Later Hap learns the techniques of sports car driving with
Frenchy as his mentor, and the whole town of Bullet, Colorado eventually begins to understand the appeal of
sports cars when a race is planned on the streets of their town to the dismay of some citizens.
As intimated above, many present-day British car enthusiasts had their introduction to sports car driving
through reading "The Red Car" in junior high school.  The book was originally written for young adults, but
it still makes a good read for many of us who are now in our fifties, sixties, or seventies.  Even better, we
hope that it makes a good read for present-day youngsters who might do worse things than developing an
enthusiasm for British cars as exhibited by many who will read this catalogue entry.
